Abstract: In this paper, the influences of the physical properties of ultrafine fly ash, prepared by two processes of steam jet milling and ball milling, on the mechanical properties of cement paste were studied. The hydration process of fly ash in cement paste was analyzed by backscattered scanning electrons. The results show that the ultrafine fly ash prepared by steam jet mill has the characteristics of narrow and uniform particle size distribution, more spherical particles and better dispersibility, which are beneficial to reduce water demand and improve strength activity index, and lead to the faster hydration speed of fly ash in the cement slurry, helping to enhance the compressive strength of composite cementitious materials of the paste.
