Abstract: In order to sovle the problem of the precision of the results obtained by the existed methods from water absorption and expansion of montmorillonite,and breaking in its layered structure under severe conditions,we established the method with good precisions of laser light scattering method. The effects of ultrasonic time,stirring time,stirring rate and dispersing time on particle sizes were investigated. The results show that ultrasonic and high speed agitation are not suitable for dispersing montmorillonite particles. Under the conditions of moderate stirring rate between 450 and 1 600 r/min,proper dispersing time of 1 min,and measurement within 2 min,the particle size results with good repeatabilities can be obtained and the results are similar to those obtained by scanning electron microscope.
