Synthesis of TiO2-coal-bearing kaolinite nanocomposites and their adsorptive properties

Abstract: TiO2-coal-bearing kaolinite nanocomposites were synthesized by a hydrothermal method using coal-bearing kaolinite (CBK) and titanium sulfate as raw materials, and their adsorption abilities for organic dyes were investigated. The results show that the adsorption rate of methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR) reached 95.5% and 98.0% at C0=100 mg/L, V=20 mL, m=50 mg, and contact time=60 min, when the solution pH values are 12 and 7, respectively. After modification with TiO2, the adsorption rate of MB and CR increased by 30% and 24% with respect to original CBK. The dye-adsorption kinetics fit well the pseudo-second order rate equation, while the adsorption isotherm data can best be described by Langmuir adsorption model.
