Abstract: Two kinds of monosize fractions quartz sands such as >2~2.36、0.83~2 mm were used as raw materials, the steel balls and short cylindrical steel forgings as grinding media, grinding filling of 500 g, the pulp mass fraction was 65%,grinding time of 0.5、1、2、4、8 min, ratio of number of steel balls: D30 ∶D25 ∶D20=43 ∶62 ∶96, ratio of number of short cylindrical steel forgings:D30×30 ∶D25×25 ∶D20×20=28 ∶41 ∶64,ball charge of 0.4, mill speed of 96 r/min, and the dry grinding were performed. The results show that the specific rates of crushing of quartz obeys first-order-breakage kinetics with different shape of medium, and the specific rates of crushing of the short-cylinder steel forging were obviously higher than those of the steel ball under short time, also there has some effect on primary breakage distribution parameters with the shape of the medium in short time (1 min). The smaller the value of γ is, the easier it is to crush, the crushing speed of materials are of φ、 β. Compared with steel ball medium, the value of γ was smaller, while the value of φ and β is larger. It is suggested that steel forging medium can be chosen to crush quartz sand rapidly during the crushing process.
