Study on Process of Calcination and Activation of Kaolin

Abstract: The calcination and activation of kaolin was researched by TGDSC, XRD, IR, SEM and Raman spectra tests. The temperature range of calcination and activation of kaolin were obtained. The change of functional groups in the kaolin before and after calcination was analyzed. The compressive strength and micrograph of the geopolymer which was prepared by calcined kaolin were compared. The results show that best calcination and activation condition of kaolin is calcination at 600 ℃ for 6 h. The hydrated paste structure of geopolymer prepared with the calcined kaolin is dense. The hydration products stack laminally. The 7 d compressive strength of hydrated geopolymer paste is 62.7 MPa.
