Abstract: The flow characteristics of fluid in a fixed-bed tubular reactor with different packing densities of catalyst particles were simulated using the method of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) -distinct element method (DEM) coupling. The distributions of velocity field and pressure field were explored when the fluid flowed through the bed. The results show that increasing the initial velocity of the falling particles can increase the packing density in the bed. Comparing with the bed filled by its gravity of particles, the number of packing particles increases at the initial speed of 5 m/s, the porosity of bed decreases by 6.64%, and the packing density enhances by 5.48%. The increase of packing density can make the pressure drop rise by 44.29% extremely, the residence time of medium within the bed can be prolonged, and the contact time can be extended.
