Strength Activity Characteristic and Mechanism of Waste Glass Powders

Abstract: To study the activity characteristic and mechanism of waste glass powders, colorless, green and brown waste glass bottles were ground to prepare four kinds of powders with different specific surface areas. These powders were used as replacements for Portland cement to produce mortar specimens. Strength activity indexes of these specimens at six different ages were measured. The mechanism of pozzolanic activity of waste glass powders was analyzed by SEM, XRD and pH value of pore solution of hardened cement paste. The results show that the strength activity indexes of waste glass powders increase with the increase of specific surface areas. There is a good linear relationship between them. The strength activity indexes of waste glass powders increase with the increase of ages, and are associated with color. The strength activity indexes of waste glass powders are less than those of fly ash with similar specific surface areas when the age is less than 28 d, and are close to or even greater than those of fly ash when the age is 28 d or more than 28 d.
