Abstract: Different types of organic montmorillonite powders were made by mechanochemistry method with surfactants of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, sodium dodecyl sulfate and sodium stearate alone or in combination. XRD, FTIR and surface contact angle were used to analyze and characterize the montmorillonite and obtained samples. The mechanism of preparing organic montmorillonite by mechanochemistry was researched. The results show that the mechanism of mechanochemistry is different from that of the wet modification. Under the action of mechanochemistry, the surfactant is combined with montmorillonite layer. Two montmorillonite layers and surfactant combine to form one new unit. The montmorillonite layers are stripped. The montmorillonite particles are finally modified.
