Abstract: To obtain the environmental friendly flame retardant composite wood materials, composite wood material samples with flame retardant property were prepared using the wood veneer, phenolic resin adhesive and magnesium hydroxide. The mechanical property and flame retardant performance were tested and analyzed by the means of tensile test, SEM, limit oxygen index and TG. The results indicate that the addition of appropriate amount of Mg(OH)2 can obviously improve the mechanical property and flame retardant performance of composite wood materials. When the addition mass of Mg(OH)2 is 1.2 times that of the solid content of the adhesive (the mass of adhesive dry film),the bonding strength increases by 48.1% and the limit oxygen index value reaches 36.3%. By compounding Mg(OH)2 and Al(OH)3 into the composite wood materials, the limit oxygen index value increases to 38.7% .
