Abstract: To achieve full utilization of the fly ash residue after extracting aluminium oxide, the particle properties of the residue and its effect and mechanism of treating acidic solution containing Cr3+ were studied. The fly ash residue was characterized by chemical composition analysis, XRD, specific surface area, and SEM. The results show that the residue is mainly consisted of Ca(OH)2 and Ca2SiO4 with porous structure of large specific surface area and strong alkalinity. Based on characteristics of the fly ash residue, the acidic solution containing heavy metal ions Cr3+ is treated effectively by the fly ash residue. The removal rate of Cr3+ in 100 mL acid solution with mass fraction of Cr2(SO4)3 of 1.598×10-3 can reach 99% by 0.12 g residue. The pH of the solution increases from 2.54 to 6.01. Cr3+almost completely precipitates in the form of Cr2O3.
