Abstract

Some monomers may be intercalated into interlamellor regions of clay minerals due to their adsorbability, ion change capacity and swelling properties, following by polymerization in the constrained two-dimensional interlayer spaces,or polymer are intercalated directly into interlamellar regions. Thus,polymer-layered clay mineral nanocomposites or functional materials which exhibit properties dramatically different from their more conventional counterparts can be formed. This paper briefly reviews the structures of 2:1 type layred clay minerals and the synthesis, characterization and properties of polymer-layered clay mineral nanocomposites.
